Temagami Grouse Hunting Temagami grouse hunting is a tradition for many of our guests at Ridgewood Cottage Resort. Its proximity to the Nipissing Crown Game Preserve makes it a natural lodging choice for experience hunters. Call today at 1-705-569-3870 for reservations or information. Temagami is the top ruffed grouse producing area in Ontario. No other province harvests as many ruffed grouse each fall or provides as much public hunting land containing ruffed grouse. The ruffed grouse is a native woodland bird about the size of a small chicken. The bird is noted for its fan shaped tail marked by a broad, dark band. Some ruffed grouse called red phased birds have chestnut colored tails, and the gray phased birds have gray or slate colored tails. The bird also has a concealed neck ruff that the male puffs out during courtship displays. Male ruffed grouse make a well known drumming noise that sounds similar to a distant lawnmower engine. He drums by beating his wings in the air, starting slowly as a series of thumps, and then, as beating speeds up, the sound resembles a drum or engine. The drumming occurs on logs, boulders, tree roots, or other elevated sites known as drumming logs. Our proximity to the Nipissing Crown Game Preserve makes Ridgewood Cottage Resort a perfect place to start your grouse hunt or your woodcock hunt as the forest provides great cover for these fowl. A beautiful walk through recently logged forest ground is a good area to start your hunt. The forestry trails and roads will also produce a good harvest. Pay attention to fallen trees and brush where the birds like to hang out and be prepared for the startling flap when you least expect it! Ruffed grouse hunting in Temagami northeastern Ontario When small game season opens for grouse hunting in Temagami, in the early fall, the time is right to bag a bounty of grouse, and if that means dealing with good or bad Canadian weather, so be it. Grouse like to stay cool in early fall when Temagami days can send the thermometer to balmy temperatures. During these glorious fall Temagami days, grouse will sleep in their cozy roosts and then venture out to soak up the warming rays on a sunny day. September and October are months when cover becomes as much a priority as food. Staying warm and out of the cold north winds makes the places that grouse frequent during the early fall months predictable. Most times the temperature can give you an idea on which way to go. Grouse seasons open in September in most northern Ontario areas. Going hunting then is more tradition than it is to wanting to kill grouse. Foliage can be thick, dense and green making it harder to spot but, you might as well give yourself a chance at finding grouse. There are miles of ATV trails, old logging roads and animal paths where you will find a populous of Grouse. The best time for grouse hunting is in late September. Many of the leaves have fallen, which improves visibility. The mornings are cool and frosty, which are the conditions grouse like the best and become more active. Grouse hunting is more then just hunting, it's a chance to take a long walk through the wilderness and enjoy the scenery, perhaps spot other wildlife and take a few pictures. After spending a few days breathing in that clean northern Ontario air, you will feel great. The limit for grouse (Ruffed or Spruce in any combination) is 5 per day with a total limit in your possession of 15. A good grouse gun would be a .410 or 20 gauge. Some hunters us their 12 gauge. Our whole area of backcountry hiking and ATV trails, gives grouse hunters easy access to areas with a high population of grouse. The grouse population is so high in our area that we even have a few resident grouse living on the campgrounds. This part of Temagami offers just the right combination of feed and cover that grouse and partridge excel in. Many of our moose hunters reported seeing an over average amount of grouse and partridge this year, on an average day, you can expect 10 or more flushes and youll be hunting during the peak season in Temagami. Use of one of our boats & motors is included in the hunt or bring your own and tie in a little fall fishing to round out the week of a northern Ontario hunt. Ruffed Grouse are the more common grouse, in the fall the grouse are well camouflaged. Our backcountry trails are out in the bush and deep enough in the woods so that if you stop and listen, you can locate grouse when they walk across the dried leaves that have fallen. Ruffed Grouse and Partridge flourish in the thousands of acres of crown forest that surround the camp. The bush trails with the rise of the birds, singing of the guns, the smell of the pines then friendly comradeship back at the camp will not be forgotten. ATV's and dogs are both welcome guests for the hunt as long as they are kept under control.
